The
Volunteer Centers are located throughout the state referring
over 650,000 volunteers each year to approximately 40,000
community-based organizations. Volunteer Centers have has
a long history in California as leaders and advocates of volunteerism
as a means of solving serious social problems. They work collaboratively
with public and nonprofit organizations in addressing community
needs.
While
all of the Volunteer Centers run a general volunteer service
program that refers individual or group volunteers to appropriate
projects in the community, there is considerable variation
among the structure, programs and activities of the individual
Centers. They all possess an in-depth knowledge of the community-based
organizations, city and county agencies, businesses and other
key resources in their region. Volunteer Centers are funded
by various resources including private and corporate donations,
foundation grants, fundraising and government grants.
