Programs and Services:

  • Community Service Program
    Recruits and refers over 15,000 volunteers to 900 nonprofit organizations in San Francisco and provides nonprofits with technical assistance on volunteer management. By providing resources, in the form of volunteers, and increasing organizational capacity for such a large number of nonprofits, the Volunteer Center supports work in every community and on almost every issue facing San Francisco.

    Annually, over 10,000 people volunteer in San Mateo County through referrals by the Volunteer Center. The Center works with among 600 nonprofit organizations throughout the County to help them strengthen and expand their volunteer programs. Workshops and consultations are offered throughout the year to provide training in volunteer program development and management.

  • Transitional Volunteer Program
    Places over 150 mentally and physically disabled individuals annually in structured, supportive volunteer jobs that help them increase self-esteem, build confidence and learn job skills. The TVP Youth Program works with youth with mental or learning disabilities who are finishing high school to transition into higher grades, training or employment. In 1999, TVP was a finalist for the Monroe Trout Premier Cares Award.

  • Youth Empowerment Program
    Builds the capacity of schools, youth development organizations, and other community-based groups to engage young people in volunteer service. The program also provides resources and referral services to individual youth seeking volunteer opportunities and works to integrate community service into academic curricula and develop school/community partnerships. The Guide to Youth Volunteer Opportunities has been replicated in 15 communities in the continental United States and Hawaii.

  • Corporate Services Program
    Enables companies to develop innovative, effective employee volunteer programs and explore other ways of increasing their presence in the community and support for nonprofit organizations. As part of this work, Corporate Services convenes the Bay Area Corporate Volunteer Council, a membership organization comprising 25 local corporations, to address issues facing professionals in the field of corporate community relations.

  • Board Match Plus
    Works to diversify nonprofit boards and thus make the nonprofit sector’s leadership more representative of the Bay Areas’ rich diversity. Board Match Plus offers board matching and board orientation services and an online matching service at www.boardmatchplus.org

  • Emergency Preparedness Program
    In collaboration with local governments’ Offices of Emergency Services, assists nonprofits and local government to incorporate volunteers in their emergency preparedness and recovery planning. With a focus on vulnerable communities, the Volunteer Center is working with community partners to be prepared to open volunteer reception and referral centers that would become operational in the event of a disaster.

Annual Special Events:

  • Corporate Volunteer Recognition Luncheon
    Reception and awards ceremony by which local corporations recognize their employees who volunteer in the community. The Luncheon highlights exemplary corporate volunteer programs and individual achievement in volunteer service.

  • The Human Race
    This community fundraising event in San Mateo County allows people to raise money for the nonprofit organization of their choice. Coordinated by the Center, over 1,000 people participate each year – raising more than $100,000 for area nonprofit organizations.
